Why our Class 1 cover suits
the Toyota Prius
HEV / PHEV technology needs different care. Here is the peace of mind you get with PrakanEV.
Built for the HEV / PHEV drivetrain
The Toyota Prius combines an engine, an electric motor and a high-voltage battery. Our policies are designed to cover damage to all of these parts.
100% Hybrid Battery Cover
For hybrid cars, battery cover does not step down by year, so it is covered at 100% of the sum insured.
⚠️ Note: only battery damage from an accident is covered. Failure that is not caused by an accident cannot be claimed (use the manufacturer warranty).
Cover for damage to your car
- If you hit another vehicle
- If another vehicle hits you
- Single-vehicle accidents (no other party)
- If you hit an object or an animal
- If the car is stolen or catches fire
- Natural disasters (including flood)
- Glass damage: repair or replacement
- Towing after an accident to the nearest repair shop
What Toyota Prius owners often worry about
Hybrids have more electrics, batteries and sensors than regular cars, so choosing the right insurance really matters.
Low aerodynamic design that can scrape the underbody
Shaped for maximum aerodynamics, the Prius has low ground clearance. Owners worry about large speed bumps and steep ramps scraping an underbody full of wiring and battery components.
Hammerhead front design and TSS 3.0 sensors
The sleek front hides the radar and sensors of the full Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system. After a head-on impact, parts and calibration are delicate and cost more than usual.
Panoramic glass roof
The large glass roof feels premium but risks stone chips on the motorway, and replacing it costs several times more than a regular steel roof.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology and the charging port
The PHEV adds a charging port on the side of the body, another point that can be damaged in a scrape. Claims need high-voltage specialists.
Toyota Prius Insurance FAQ
Is the charging cable and port (PHEV) covered?▼
Class 1 covers damage from an accident, such as a collision at the charging port or an accident while parked and charging. It does not cover dropping and breaking the cable yourself or a connector wearing out over time.
I scraped a speed bump and damaged the underbody. Will insurance pay?▼
Yes. Scraping the road or a speed bump is a single-vehicle accident. If it damages the underbody or battery mounting, Class 1 pays for the repair (an excess may apply if you cannot state the date, time and place).
Is it hard to claim for a broken panoramic roof?▼
Not with Class 1. You can report the claim and take the car to the dealer for a new glass roof right away, including window film to the original specification.
Why use a slide-on tow truck when the car breaks down?▼
The Prius electric motor is linked to the wheels, so towing with the front or rear wheels on the ground can damage it. Carrying the whole car on a slide-on truck is the safest way to move a hybrid.
How much is a Prius battery?▼
The Prius hybrid battery price depends on the version and capacity. Repairs or replacement should be done at a Toyota service centre equipped for high-voltage systems.
Can I claim flood damage on a Prius PHEV?▼
If your policy includes flood cover, the insurer pays for flood damage under the policy conditions.
Common parts and repair costs
The Toyota Prius hybrid system and sensors can cost more to repair than a regular car in some cases.

In depth: what Toyota Prius owners should know before buying insurance
1. Why a dealer-repair plan is essential
The Prius is one of Toyota’s most technology-packed cars. Ordinary garages may lack the skills or diagnostic tools for the new PHEV/HEV systems, so dealer repair is the most worthwhile peace of mind.
2. The sum insured must cover the technology, not just the body
Choose a sum insured that reflects the battery, twin motors and inverter. In a serious accident, these electronic parts are the most valuable in the car.
3. 360-degree glass cover
With a steeply raked windscreen and a panoramic roof, Class 1 cover that pays 100% for glass with no depreciation, including new window film, is a must.
Claim cases to watch for with the Toyota Prius
🚨 A flying stone cracks the glass roof on a long trip
The case glass-roof owners fear most. Class 1 pays for a genuine dealer replacement roof, plus the careful labour to fit it.
🚨 Underbody scrape on a steep slope triggers an electrical warning
A scrape that is trivial on most cars can reach the Prius battery guard. Insurance covers lifting the car to inspect it and replacing the underbody panel.
🚨 A motorcycle squeezes past and hits the charging flap (PHEV)
If a side scrape hits the charging port, the dealer must also check that the charging system inside still works, not just repaint the body.
100% battery cover and 10-month installments
If the Toyota Prius high-voltage hybrid battery is damaged in an accident, our policies cover it at 100% (up to the sum insured) with no step-down depreciation (battery wear with age is claimed under the Toyota warranty). You can also pay the premium in 10 interest-free cash installments to spread the cost.
